HeartBeat.bio and Molecular Devices package cardiac organoids for scalable safety studies

The companies have announced two 3D Ready Cardioid Supplement Kits designed to generate beating iPSC-derived cardiac organoids in manual or automated workflows.

Molecular Devices and HeartBeat.bio have announced the upcoming 3D Ready Cardioid Supplement Kit, a commercial workflow for producing functional cardiac organoids from human induced pluripotent stem cells. General availability is planned for autumn 2026, with an early-access programme already open.

The product will be offered in two formats. A single-lineage version produces cardiomyocyte-only organoids, while a tri-lineage version incorporates cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells and fibroblasts. The latter is intended for questions such as fibrosis, chronic toxicity and mechanisms of cardiac injury.

The technological angle

The advance is productisation. Cardiac organoids are scientifically attractive, but adoption in discovery and safety groups depends on whether they can be generated consistently, measured at scale and integrated with existing laboratory automation.

HeartBeat.bio contributes its Cardioid biology; Molecular Devices contributes automation, imaging, detection and workflow integration. The kits are designed for both manual and automated use, and the companies say they produce beating structures with chamber architecture. Contract research company Axxam has performed phenotypic and functional validation, according to the announcement.

Why it matters

Cardiotoxicity remains a costly source of drug-development failure. A standardized human cardiac organoid workflow could provide richer biology than a cardiomyocyte monolayer while remaining more deployable than a bespoke organoid protocol. The tri-lineage format is particularly relevant because non-myocyte cells can shape remodelling and toxicity responses.

What to watch

The kits are not yet generally available. Their value will depend on cross-site reproducibility, throughput, cost and—most importantly—whether they predict clinical cardiac liabilities better than established iPSC-cardiomyocyte and other preclinical assays. Independent head-to-head benchmarking will be important.
