MatTek, part of Sartorius, has joined the Industry Alliance for Microphysiological Systems (IAMPS), becoming the group's tenth member. IAMPS brings companies together around scientific, regulatory and implementation questions for organoids, organs-on-chips and related human-relevant models.
What changes with the membership
MatTek contributes a long history of reconstructed human tissue and 3D microtissue products used in areas including irritation, toxicity and disease research. IAMPS provides a shared industry forum for developing evidence, terminology and regulatory positions across platforms.
The announcement is not a new model launch. Its significance is collective: the field needs comparable performance standards and credible contexts of use that no single vendor can establish alone.
Why it matters
Regulators do not accept “MPS” as one undifferentiated technology. Each system must be evaluated against a purpose, endpoint and domain of applicability. Alliances can help companies agree on study designs, reporting expectations and reference compounds before approaching regulators with fragmented evidence.
Established tissue providers can also help connect newer perfused platforms with the quality systems and customer expectations already familiar to industrial laboratories.
What to watch
Membership announcements only matter if they produce shared work. Useful outputs would include public qualification datasets, inter-laboratory studies, minimum reporting standards and clear regulatory case studies. Transparency will be important: common standards should allow models to be compared, not merely promote the category.
HCMX take
The MPS field is entering a phase where coordination can be as important as invention. MatTek's participation broadens the practical experience around the table; the test is whether that experience becomes evidence that regulators and users can inspect.
